Camera control means moving the view yourself so you see more of the map, then snapping back to your champion at once. Paired with a glance at the minimap every few seconds, it lets you spot ganks, roams and flanks before they arrive, which is why so many solo deaths are avoidable.

What it is

League gives you two camera behaviours. A locked camera follows your champion and keeps you in view. An unlocked camera lets you scroll the view yourself, with the mouse at the screen edge, with the Scroll Camera keys, or by dragging, and the scrolling speed can be tuned in the Game settings. The advantage of an unlocked camera is that you can look ahead of you, at the river or the next wave, without moving your champion.

The risk is losing sight of yourself in a fight, which is why the snap-back matters. There is a Toggle Camera Lock key (default Y), a Select Self key (default F1), and a hotkey that centres the camera on your champion. Many players keep that last one on the spacebar, so check your own Hotkeys tab for the key you actually have. Holding Select Self keeps the camera following your champion.

The minimap is the second half. It shows where visible champions are and, just as usefully, which champions are not visible. A glance takes half a second and tells you whether a lane has gone empty. The habit is the point: you cannot react to a gank you never see coming, and most ganks can be seen a few seconds ahead if you look.

How to do it

  1. Decide on your camera mode and settings

In Settings, find the camera options. Choose whether the game starts with a free or locked camera, and set the camera speed for the mouse and for the keyboard so that moving the view feels quick but controllable. Also check that edge scrolling is how you want to move the camera, and note which key you use to centre it.

  2. Bind a snap-back key you can reach in a fight

Pick a key next to your ability keys, such as the spacebar, for centring the camera on your champion, and use it constantly. Learn the Select Self key as a backup. A camera that is not centred in a fight is the main reason beginners dislike unlocked play.

  3. Look away, then snap back, on a trigger

Give yourself a trigger: every time a minion dies, or every time you last-hit. At that moment, move the camera to see something useful, such as the enemy's side of the lane or the river, and then snap back before the next action. Using a trigger turns it into a habit, so you do not rely on remembering.

  4. Check the minimap on the same trigger

Glance at the minimap whenever a minion dies, after clearing a camp, and between attacks while kiting. You are checking for two things: who is missing from their lane, and where the enemy jungler was last seen. Spend less than a second.

  5. Act on what the minimap shows

If two enemies vanish from view, step back toward safety or a ward before continuing. If a teammate's lane is empty, ping a warning. If the enemy jungler was last seen on the far side, you can take the trade. A glance without a decision is wasted.

  6. Use the camera to scout, not to hide

Use the free view to see into bushes and past a wave before you step forward. Do not leave your champion out of view for long during a fight, because fights are when you need to see your own position.

Watch it

What to watch for: A three-level drill: farm while moving the camera with the minimap and re-centring with the spacebar, then add function keys and the scoreboard.

Common mistakes

  • You scroll away during a fight and lose your champion. Snap back with your centre-camera key before you act.
  • You check the minimap only when you remember to. Tie it to a trigger such as every minion death.
  • You look at the minimap but do nothing about what you see. Every glance should end in a decision: back off, ping, or push.
  • You set the camera speed so high that you overshoot. Lower it until you can stop on the spot you want.
  • You trust a key name you have not checked. Look at your own Hotkeys tab, because defaults can differ from custom setups.

Practice drill

  • In the Practice Tool with an enemy dummy, farm and move the camera to a different lane after every minion kill, then snap back with your centre key. Success is that you never lose sight of your champion for more than a second.
  • In a normal game, count the number of times you check the minimap in one wave. Aim for one check per minion death, and name who is missing.
